Alexander Sterzel (1967)

Alexander Sterzel lives and works in the Stuttgart area. In his works he visually captures the associations and relationships of life. We see human figures and others from a more fantasy background like angels, gnomes, ghosts. It seems as if the artist has captured sequences from dreams. But those figures are always engaged in dramatic circumstances, some of which they have caused themselves, others where forced on them by fate.

Medicine, literature, religious arguments, old and faded photographs, X-ray films and secretive codes create an exciting cross section which Sterzel uses to sketch out otherwise inexplicable forms of life and suffering. In addition, the transition from here to eternity, from grief to hope, decay and remembering are a central part in the work of the artist.

L'archeologia è la scienza che studia le civiltà e le culture umane del passato e le loro relazioni con l'ambiente circostante, mediante la raccolta, la documentazione e l'analisi delle tracce materiali che hanno lasciato. Delle tombe del 5000 a.c., ad esempio, vengono studiate le posizioni e le condizioni dei corpi tumulati e i manufatti che li accompagnano. Per cercare di capire come viveva, come interagiva e in cosa credeva una determinate popolazione.

 Un punto focale dell’archeologia è il rapporto con la morte. Per comprendere come viveva una civiltà se ne studia il culto dei defunti; importante per capirne l’evoluzione è anche la stratificazione dei sedimenti, cosa è sopra e cosa è sotto, cosa è stato aggiunto e cosa è stato tolto.

 Trovo che l’arte di Alexander Sterzel abbia un approccio e un metodo di ricerca molto simile all’archeologia: attraverso stratificazioni cerca di svelare la vita dei suoi soggetti. Persone morte, forse anche solo interiormente, sospese in un limbo in attesa di essere “scoperte”. Alexander rivela la bizzarria della condizione umana, l’attaccamento ancestrale ai simboli legati alla morte, la diversità di ognuno di noi. L’anima e il mostro che sono legati a ogni individuo. Il mistero e il bizzarro che permea le nostre esistenze.

 Alexander rivela l’anima dei singoli attraverso segni universali.

Uno dei problemi fondamentali dell’attuale civiltà occidentale è l’allontanamento dalla morte. La mancanza di accettazione della fine della vita e il rifiuto di riconoscere il ciclo della vita nella sua integralità sono segni del declino spirituale del nostro tempo.

Sterzel ci fa riflettere sulla sacralità del ciclo vitale. L’importanza di artisti che ci fanno guardare oltre è un valore fondamentale per capire la natura umana e il senso della vita e che ciò che crediamo oscuro è, a volte, l’unica cosa chiara che abbiamo.

Alexander Sterzel è uno di questi artisti.
